Give Your Team Back the Time Buried in the Record

Structured record-review and research support for Maryland criminal defense and post-conviction counsel.

The problem

Large criminal records — multiple volumes of transcripts, years of motions, exhibits, docket entries, and procedural history — require substantial review time before a defense or post-conviction theory can be responsibly evaluated. That time is finite, and it competes with everything else on the docket.

Source materials are frequently scattered across multiple productions, inconsistently paginated, and delivered without any organizational structure. Counsel must either absorb that burden directly or delegate it to staff who may lack the case-specific context to do it efficiently.

The result is slower case orientation, higher per-matter cost, and the risk that something significant in the record goes unnoticed until it is too late to act on it.

Potential support

Depending on scope and the specific needs of the matter, support may include:

  • Record inventory — a structured accounting of what has been produced, what is present, and what appears to be missing.
  • Transcript indexing — witness-by-witness and topic-indexed summaries with page and line citations to the original record.
  • Procedural chronology — a date-ordered reconstruction of hearings, rulings, filings, and procedural events drawn from the docket and record.
  • Witness and exhibit mapping — identification of who testified, what exhibits were introduced, and how each connects to the theory of the case.
  • Source and quotation extraction — targeted pulls of specific testimony, rulings, or record passages with precise citations for use in briefs or memoranda.
  • Contradiction tracking — identification of inconsistencies within or across testimony, exhibits, and prior filings.
  • Organized issue files — record materials grouped by legal issue or factual theory, with source citations, to support focused attorney review.
  • Research memoranda — attorney-directed legal research on identified issues, with citations and analysis structured for attorney use and review.
  • Attorney-directed drafting support — preparation of draft sections, argument outlines, or record-based factual narratives under attorney supervision and direction.
  • Attorney-orientation packets — consolidated case summaries designed to bring new counsel or co-counsel up to speed on a complex record efficiently.

Technology with human control

Advanced research technology increases review horsepower — the ability to move through large records faster, surface relevant passages more efficiently, and identify patterns across thousands of pages that would take significantly longer to locate manually.

Source verification remains mandatory. Every significant finding is traced to its location in the original record. Technology does not replace the verification step; it accelerates the work that precedes it.

Technology does not replace attorney judgment. The attorney retains full control over legal strategy, client advice, filing decisions, and representation. Finding Freedom's role is to prepare organized, well-sourced materials that make the attorney's review faster and more complete — not to substitute for it.
